Microgrids, Nanogrids, and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are key enablers of grid resiliency, sustainability, and community empowerment. Our research in this space is centered on innovative solution validation through proofs of concept, product ecosystem development, and commercialization strategy. By identifying wire and cable synergies and partnering with leading industry players, we are positioning Southwire at the forefront of grid modernization and evolution. Our goal is to support the creation of resilient, scalable microgrid solutions that serve communities and utilities alike–with an emphasis on disruption and breakthrough opportunities. We are also exploring various application areas across critical infrastructure, remote environments, and disaster response zones – reinforcing Southwire’s commitment to enabling reliable and responsible power delivery through innovative solutions.
The Grid of the Future Domain is advancing comprehensive research into the technical and commercial feasibility across a suite of Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) to improve the capacity, efficiency, and adaptability of the transmission and distribution network. Our focus includes advanced conductors, dynamic line ratings (DLR), advanced power flow controls (APFC), topology optimization and other smart grid-interactive infrastructure that enables utilities to manage congestion as well as optimize performance in real time. Through rigorous benchmarking of key providers, utility partnerships for pilots, and alignment with regulatory frameworks like FERC 881, Southwire is expanding its leadership in innovative solutions. Our work prioritizes identifying product synergies, validating market-ready solutions, and driving innovation that enhances grid flexibility and performance. In parallel, we are exploring how GETs can be integrated with Southwire’s existing portfolio offerings to strengthen transmission performance and further empower utilities to meet growing electrification demands while supporting reliability, resiliency, and grid hardening.
As the grid transitions toward more decentralized and renewable sources, energy storage has become a critical enabler of reliability, flexibility, and grid stability. Our research focuses on a range of storage technologies—including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS), Hydrogen, Fuel cells, and Geothermal solutions. We benchmark battery chemistries, latest innovation advancements, research on improving performance and durability, and identify how Southwire’s wire and cable expertise can optimize integrated, next-generation energy storage solutions.
We are taking an ecosystem approach—collaborating with technology partners and exploring supporting solutions that enhance storage performance, safety, and scalability. With storage playing a pivotal role in enabling renewable generation from both an operational and reliability standpoint, we aim to empower utilities in their transition to cleaner, more resilient energy systems.
